For Nonfiction Writers

Memoir. Reported nonfiction.
The full studio applies.

Managing a long-form manuscript, tracking real people across chapters, keeping research organized and retrievable, writing with AI that has read all your source material. These are the same problems whether your book is invented or true.

What the Studio Does

The full toolkit, applied to your book.

Manuscript Structure

The Book / Chapter / Scene hierarchy works for nonfiction structure: part, chapter, section. Drag-and-drop reordering. Scene-level synopsis for outlining what each section does. Word count per section and total.

Source & Research Management

World Building stores your research material. Upload documents: source PDFs, interview transcripts, notes, timelines. Voyage AI retrieves only the relevant sources when you're writing a specific section.

Character / Subject Tracking

Character Scribing works for real subjects. Auto-detect people from your prose, tag them to every section they appear in, track appearances chronologically. For multi-subject books, continuity checking that would otherwise require manual re-reads.

AI Writing Modes

Discuss mode works especially well for nonfiction: multi-turn conversation with AI that has read your full manuscript and source notes. Edit mode rewrites prose for clarity, pace, and structure without changing your meaning. Write mode with the Narrative Journalism preset will not fabricate facts.

Nonfiction Presets

Two craft-grade presets built specifically for nonfiction. Narrative Nonfiction & Memoir draws from Karr, Strayed, Didion, McPhee, and Coates. Narrative Journalism activates research verification mode with source-first generation and [VERIFY] markers on unconfirmed claims.

Export

EPUB 3, Word .docx, print-ready PDF. For manuscripts going to agents or publishers: standard .docx formatting with title page, table of contents, and custom typography controls. Submission-ready in one compile.

Narrative Journalism Presetsource verification

The AI that won't make up your sources.

GrimoireScribe's Narrative Journalism preset is the only mode in the app that changes how the AI generates. When this preset is active, the AI does not produce factual claims without sourcing.

Source-first generation means the AI asks what source supports a specific claim before writing prose that contains it. It does not fill gaps in your research with plausible-sounding fabrications. If you haven't given it a source for a fact, it marks that fact [VERIFY] in the draft and flags it for your review.

When two sources conflict, the AI presents both versions and marks the conflict rather than choosing one silently. You decide which source to use and how to handle the discrepancy for the reader. The AI makes the conflict visible, not invisible.

This preset uses more tokens than fiction presets due to source verification calls. This is by design. Accurate nonfiction takes more work than fast generation.

AI Draft Output
The warehouse fire started at 2:14 a.m. on a Thursday. Firefighters arrived eleven minutes later. By then the building was fully involved. Forty-three workers were inside on the overnight shift.
Source note
"Forty-three workers" - confirm against fire department incident report. Only current source: survivor interview (single account). [SINGLE SOURCE]
The exit nearest the loading dock was chained from the outside. [VERIFY: source conflict] A second door on the north wall was blocked by inventory pallets.
Source conflict
Fire marshal report: "door secured with padlock." Facility manager statement: "doors unlocked per code." Presenting both for your review.

Narrative Nonfiction & Memoircraft preset

Your experience, written for someone else.

The central craft challenge of memoir is rendering your own experience in a way that's useful to someone who isn't you. The reader wasn't there. The events mattered to you. The question is why they should matter to them.

GrimoireScribe's Narrative Nonfiction preset is built from the writers who solved that problem: Joan Didion's fragmented syntax as emotional state, Cheryl Strayed's unsentimental clarity about hard experience, Mary Karr's unflinching precision, John McPhee's structural patience with material that resists easy shape.

The memoir craft challenge isn't accuracy. It's selection: what to include, what to withhold, and in what order. The preset helps you make those choices deliberately rather than by default.

The narrator as character: you, constructed on the page, not simply reported

Prose rhythm as emotional signal: sentence structure that enacts the feeling

Scene vs. summary: when to inhabit a moment and when to compress time

What to leave out: the craft of withholding is as important as what you include

Tonal distance: how to write about painful things without performing the pain

The reader-to-narrator relationship: why your experience should matter to them

Narrative Nonfiction - Edit Mode
Prose Before
I was very sad when my mother died. It was a really hard time in my life and I cried a lot. I didn't know how to handle it.
Preset Edit: Karr / Strayed register
My mother died on a Tuesday in November. I drove home from the hospital in the rain. I don't remember parking the car. The house smelled like her for six more days, and then it didn't.
Edit note: "I was very sad" performs the emotion. The rewrite enacts it through specific, sensory detail. The reader feels it without being told what to feel. Strayed: "unsentimental clarity about hard experience."

Citation Management

GrimoireScribe is not a citation manager. It doesn't format endnotes, generate bibliographies, or track source databases. It stores research documents as world notes and retrieves them semantically. Citation formatting is for your manuscript stage in Word.

Transcription

GrimoireScribe doesn't transcribe audio interviews. Bring in already-transcribed material as uploaded world documents. Once it's in your world notes, it's available for retrieval and the AI can work with it.

Collaborative Editing

GrimoireScribe is a single-writer tool. It doesn't support real-time collaborative editing or track changes between multiple editors. For editorial review, compile to .docx and use Word or Google Docs.

Fact-Checking Web Search

The Narrative Journalism preset marks unverified claims and asks for your sources. It does not autonomously browse the web to verify facts. You are the researcher. The app is the writing environment.

Nonfiction questions.

Do the nonfiction presets work with all 5 AI providers?
Yes. The writing style preset applies regardless of which provider you're using. The Narrative Journalism preset's source verification behavior is part of the mode configuration, not the provider. You can use Claude, GPT, Grok, Gemini, or Mistral.
Can I use GrimoireScribe for a book-length narrative journalism project?
Yes. The structure (part, chapter, section), world notes (source documents), character tracking (subjects), and AI writing modes all apply directly. The Narrative Journalism preset was designed specifically for book-length reported nonfiction.
Does the memoir preset handle multiple timelines?
The preset is designed to support non-linear memoir structure. The app's scene hierarchy lets you organize material by narrative position rather than chronology. Structural decisions about timeline are yours; the preset helps with the prose craft of moving between time periods.
I'm writing a reported book that's part narrative journalism and part personal essay. Which preset?
Use whichever mode you're in at a given moment. You can switch presets by chapter. Narrative Journalism for the reported chapters, Narrative Nonfiction & Memoir for the essayistic or personal sections. Presets apply at the book level but can be changed any time.
